Literacy is an important focus in the junior years. Kaleen Primary School offers small group literacy
teaching to all students in Junior School (Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2) to assist them in developing
the strategies needed for independent reading and writing.

Intensive Language Programs are built into the curriculum of each grade level. The Learning Assistance
teacher works with the class teachers at each grade level so that students are grouped according to
individual literacy needs. In their small language groups, students are able to receive intensive and very
carefully targeted teaching in all aspects of literacy, and most especially in Reading and Writing.

The progress of all students in Kindergarten and in Years 1 and 2 is regularly and carefully monitored so
that each student is placed in the most appropriate language group. In this way we ensure that all of our
students have the opportunity to develop to their full potential.

Our focus on early intervention and intensive instruction in the Junior School Literacy Program at Kaleen
Primary School is indicative of our commitment to the provision of a superior learning environment for all
our students.
