Student Leadership

At Kaleen Primary we aim to develop leadership skills in our students. The following is a summary
of our leadership strategies.

School Captains

School Captains and Vice Captains (Year 6) are elected annually by their peers. They assist with
public functions e.g. welcoming visitors, hosting school assemblies, take a leadership role in activities
and in the playground.

House Captains

House Captains and Vice Captains (Years 6) are elected annually by their peers. They are responsible,
with the help of staff, for leading and coordinating house teams.

Our school sporting houses are Cotter, Hawkesbury, Murrumbidgee and Snowy. These Houses provide
a valuable influence in the school’s educational program in that it recognises the group as well as individual
achievement. It provides students with the opportunity to contribute to their House through sporting
achievements and participation in our swimming, cross country and athletics carnivals. Family members are
placed in the same House.

Student Parliament

The Student Parliament is composed of Year 6 students who nominate and deliver a prepared speech to apply
to represent each year level. These Year 6 students are responsible for attending meetings with their year cohort,
and reporting back to our weekly Student Parliament meetings on Tuesdays at lunch. Individuals of Student
Parliament are expected to model the school values of being responsible, respectful and safe learners at all times.
Student Parliament meets each week to discuss fundraising ideas, issues relevant to the school community and
initiatives from the student body to develop students’ perspectives on proposed changes and has an important
role in improving our school.
