Leadership Message

Dear Kaleen Community,

Welcome back to the final term of 2023. I hope you enjoyed the school holidays and got out and about in the beautiful sunshine. World Teachers’ Day will be celebrated in Australia on Friday 27 October 2023. Our fabulous P&C will be hosting a thank you breakfast on Monday 30 October 2023 to acknowledge our staff who go above and beyond everyday! Please take the time to say thank you to our amazing teachers and recognise their work and dedication. This week we welcomed several new families into our beautiful school. It is always so heartwarming to see the genuine kindness and compassion in our KPS students as they connect and interact with the new students in their classrooms. We are very proud of the positive school culture we have established at Kaleen. Please read on to learn more about our fabulous school.

Mural

“WOW!” Is the response we have heard all week from the students, staff and families as they stand and admire our stunning mural. This project has been a collaborative and comprehensive process to ensure our mural reflects our school community. We are so happy with the final product and would like to thank everyone who contributed their ideas and thoughts to make our mural truly unique. It is  a true representation of what Kaleen means to us. It is absolutely spectacular!

The artist, Eddie Longford, worked alongside our cultural integrity team and student leaders throughout the design process and we would like to thank him for his amazing work and for creating not only a mural, but one that has a beautiful story. Please see the blurb from Eddie which explains the symbols and their meanings within our mural.

Kaleen Primary School is our place and is in the centre of the mural. Around it is small and large U shapes - these are the people, and they represent students, teachers and staff. There are 3 other places connecting to Kaleen Primary School. These are Maribyrnong Primary School (light blue and dark blue), Giralang Primary School (blue and yellow) and UC High School Kaleen (navy, yellow and orange). Below the centre circle is a smaller red circle which represents our yarning circle and the coloured rings within it are red, blue, yellow and green, which connects with our PBL expectations and house colours.

The blue lines running through the middle are the waterways that run through the suburb. The circles represent the homes and the families. The animal tracks are the footprints of our PBL mascots (koala, wombat, kangaroo and platypus). The frogs represent the frog pond, the gum leaves and the cockatoo are all features of our school playground and Kaleen community.

Overall, the painting depicts the school’s connection to Ngunnawal community and country - it depicts learning on country.

Assemblies will continue on Friday afternoons at 2:15pm starting in Week 2, alternating senior and junior each week. The focus of these assemblies is on special messages, awards and a performance item from the host cohort. Please see the Term 4 timetable below for more details:

Mura Award

Each year, the ACT Education Directorate seeks nominations for students to receive a Mura award. The Mura award initiative recognises student achievement and provides an opportunity for schools to acknowledge the consistent effort of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in their schooling and to engage with families and the local community.

This year, the 2023 Mura award has been awarded to Ayvah (5CJ). Ayvah was nominated for being consistently engaged with her learning, an active and responsible member of the school community and for displaying leadership qualities. Congratulations Ayvah!

PE@K Timetables

At Kaleen Primary School are students are very fortunate to have a range of PE@K (Passion and Enrichment at Kaleen) programs and lunch clubs throughout the week. Please see the updated timetables for Term 4 which have a range of activities for the students to do during lunch time. If your child is looking for something to do at lunchtime, you might like to encourage your child/ren to attend one of our lunch clubs.

Rostrum 2023

In what now seems like a lifetime ago, (my apologies for taking so long to write this piece, but as they say, better late than never!) Kaleen Primary School held its Rostrum school final in Term 2. Rostrum is a speaking competition for school aged children that aims to encourage oral language skill development and is held annually across the A.C.T. and most other states in Australia. At our school, students across Years 3 to 6 are tasked with developing and delivering a short speech chosen from a variety of interesting topics (this year they ranged from “Satellites” through to “A new Adventure!”), with a finalist selected from each class to compete in the school final.

As usual, it was a hard-fought affair between the class finalists, but there could be only one overall winner and that was…. Elsa from 6TA, with her speech on the topic of “Libraries”. Elsa then went on to represent Kaleen at the Belconnen Quarter Finals a few weeks later, held at Good Shepherd Primary School in Amaroo. Again, this was a tough contest between students from all over Canberra giving their best Rostrum speeches. Having worked hard to practise her speech, and speaking impeccably well on the night, Elsa was awarded official runner up!

A huge congratulations to Elsa and all our school finalists! We look forward to another round of amazing Rostrum speeches next year.

Backyard Cricket at Government House

On a sunny, 29 degree Monday at the Governor General’s House, around 40 Kaleen students played a few rounds of cricket… in his backyard! The event was filled with 350 students from other schools all over Canberra. Kaleen students showed tremendous spirits by chanting “Howwwwws that!” as Tomoki from 5MS scored a hat trick by bowling 3 people out in a row, winning a signed cricket ball from the Governor himself. Students enjoyed a sausage sizzle with their friends, a day in the sun and wearing the special Kaleen jerseys. We will definitely be back next year!

Do you have views about mobile phones in the classroom? We want to hear them!

Have YourSay now on the policy options we are considering for student use of mobile phones in ACT public schools. The options being considered range from a put it away restriction during class times to a total ban. This includes a couple of combination options depending on year level.

We also want to know what exemptions and school management options you think should be in place.

All the info about how to participate can be found on the YourSay conversations website: https://ow.ly/rAAR50PJTnG.

This will be open until 8 October 2023.
