Leadership Message
Dear Kaleen Community,
Happy Father’s Day (for Sunday) to all the dads and significant adults in our community! We hope you get spoiled rotten and spend some quality time with your families. Thank you to the team of parents who have volunteered their time and worked tirelessly to run our Father’s Day stall. It has been absolutely wonderful seeing the smiles on children’s faces while they’re choosing their special and well thought out gifts.
It’s been a busy few weeks with Book Week, Book Fair and our Writers Festival. Thank you to all the parents/carers who have taken the time to fill out our school satisfaction surveys. The surveys are open until Friday 8 September. For those of you who are yet to complete the survey, you should have received a reminder email this week. Or you could click here to access the survey.
Please read on to hear more about our amazing school.
Book Week
It was lovely to see so many of our community members attend last week’s Book Week Parade. Click here to see a video of the fabulous costumes and parade. A special thanks to Krissy for organising our amazing author visits and the fabulous parade. Also, thanks to Tim Allen for creating a video of our character parade. We would also like to thank all of the parents/carers who supported this event.
2023 Writers Festival - We are all writers at Kaleen Primary School!
On Monday, we welcomed Harry Laing who officially launched our 2023 Writers Festival. Harry has been involved with Kaleen Primary School staff and students for the past year and spoke with the children about being a writer and how everyone has it within them, they just need to make a start and get their words out. In Harry’s words “Don’t think, Just write!”
Harry (aka RapperBee) even wrote a special poem for this event to inspire our children:
Kaleen Primary
are you’re gonna fly for me
are you gonna fly for me?
So you wanna be a writer
and you wanna be the best
put yourself to the test
and your words will impress
cos I ask for no less
to write is delight
to create something great
you’ll find words are your wings
you can zoom over things
stories and poems
where everything’s flowing
are sweeter than honey
and better than money
you can make people laugh
make them cry
make them think
just sit down and write
and before you can blink
you’ve made something new
and it’s from inside you
don’t delay
make my day
get it down
make it the best
that’s why I’m opening
the Kaleen Primary Writers Fest.

After the whole school assembly, classes investigated a ‘live scene’ where some strange objects had mysteriously crash landed in the library courtyard over the weekend. Students then had the option to use this as inspiration for their daily writing.
Students are currently learning about the writing process and will share some of their writing with you at the Learning Expo in week 9. During weeks 7&8, students from Preschool to Year 6 are encouraged to write in any style or about any topic, including about the mysterious ‘live scene’ . Harry Laing will also take on the role of independent judge to select three pieces of writing to receive a special prize.
Thank you to our Literacy School Improvement Team for organising this year’s Writers Festival. We appreciate all your hard work.
PBL Focus – Safety in the playground
From time to time we will encounter incidents on the playground during unstructured play. As a school we have established very clear expectations in regard to safe play and we use these to ensure a consistent and positive approach when helping students to deal with any incidents or issues. Over the next four week our focus is on Safe play in the Playground.
Keeping our hands and feet to ourselves.
Using our words.
Sharing equipment and spaces.
Taking turns.
Seeking assistance/help form an adult when needed.
We wear hats.
Learning Expo – Week 9
Invitations to our Learning Expo were sent home today. The Learning Expo is a fabulous opportunity for families to come into the classrooms and see all the amazing teaching and learning that the children have been undertaking.
There are 2 sessions: Thursday 14 September 3:15pm - 4:30pm and Friday 15 September 8:30am -10:00am. Families can choose which session works best for them.
Please note that Learning Expo for the front end Preschool groups (Red and Purple) will be on Tuesday 12 September 8:30am - 10:00am and 2:30pm - 4:00pm.
I just want to finish with a message of complete admiration for our students, staff and families. We are very fortunate to work and learn together at this fabulous school.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Michelle
Regional Track & Field Championships
Congratulations to the 40 students who represented Kaleen at the Belconnen Regional Track and Field Championships on Tuesday Week 5. Athletes participated in a range of events such as long jump, sprinting, long distance running, shot put and discus. It is safe to say the Kaleen spirit was very high when students were chanting for their friends while watching them run, jump and throw. We even heard more school chants throughout the day, with everyone saying “KALEEN... KALEEN...”. Even other schools began to start their own school chants! It was lovely to see so many Kaleen families who came to support their children. Kaleen ranked 11th out of 26 schools for team participation points!

Lost Property
Our lost property bins are full again!
We do our best to return the items with names on them back to our students but unfortunately a lot of jumpers, lunch boxes, drink bottles and various items are not labelled and we are unable to return them back to the rightful owner.
Please ensure your child's belongings are clearly labelled so that they can make their way back to them. If you are missing any of your child's belongings, please pop into the hall and take a look.
Heroes Corner
If you would like to have your child's achievement acknowledged here, please email a short blurb to KaleenPSAdmin@ed.act.edu.au
