Dear Kaleen Community

We have hit the midway point of Term 3 and we are firing on all cylinders. It’s been a busy few weeks with Book Fair, Science Fair, author visits, hatching chicks, Science Show and various sports days. But the highlight for me was on Wednesday when we all came together to support the Matildas with ‘Green and Gold’ Day. Check out the whole school photo and imagine you can hear a hall full of students spontaneously chanting ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi!’ whilst the photo was being taken. It was an incredible moment! Although it was not the Matilda’s night on Wednesday, they have taught us the value of teamwork, resilience, persistence, determination, and the importance of not giving up!

We hope you enjoy reading all about the fabulous teaching and learning at Kaleen Primary School.

Indigenous Games and Interschool Buroinjin Competition

Last Thursday, we hosted our first Interschool Buroinjin competition with Giralang Primary School. It was a fabulous success and the students had a great time. It was lovely to see our Kaleen Primary School students cheering on both schools. Unfortunately, the Indigenous Games we had planned for the first part of the day were postponed due to the wet weather. A special thank you to Sophie Newton and her team of helpers for initiating and connecting with our neighbouring schools and for organising this event. We are very lucky to have such amazing staff and we look forward to future Interschool competitions.

Book Fair

Last week, the library was alive and buzzing with the Book Fair. Not only is the Book Fair a fabulous place to purchase books (and let’s be honest, the novelties and trinkets on the counter!) but a fundraiser for the school. Every dollar spent at the Book Fair gives us scholastic reward points.  The total amount of dollars collected was an enormous $9,800 which in return gave the school the sum of $2,647 to support future book purchases. Thank you to all our families who supported the Book Fair and a huge congratulations to Krissy for all her hard work in organising this for us.

Science Fair and Show

As part of Science Week, Graham Walker (one of our fabulous parents) volunteered his time and came in to give the most exhilarating, and at times explosive, show you could possibly imagine.  The children were enthralled and it created such an incredible science buzz.  I think we have inspired some future scientists and pyrotechnicians amongst our amazing students.  Also, thanks to all the families who contributed projects to the Science Fair.  The quality of the work produced was outstanding.  A special thanks to Kelly Reeves and the STEAM team for their organisation, hard work and support of all things science!

Learning Expo - Save the date!

We are thrilled to announce that after 3 years, our Learning Expos are back! Learning Expos are a fabulous opportunity for families to come into the classrooms and see all the amazing teaching and learning that the children have been undertaking.

There will be 2 sessions: Thursday 14 September 3:15pm - 4:30pm and Friday 15 September 8:30am -10:00am. Families can choose which session works best for them.

Please note that Learning Expos for the front end Preschool groups (Red and Purple) will be on Tuesday 12 September 8:30am -10:00am and 2:30pm - 4:00pm. Keep your eye out for the flyer!

Have a fabulous weekend!

2023 School Satisfaction Survey

2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey

Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 18 August to 8 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.

For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:

•          A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data (which was sent home this week); and

•          An email about the parent survey, including a unique link to access the survey. Genuine survey invitation emails will have the title "The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey is now open!" and will be sent from EDU Surveys & Evaluation with 'from' address EDU@qualtrics-survey.com

If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, please contact the school. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact the front office on 614 21750

The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.

For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part. For more information, visit: https://www.education.act.gov.au/public-school-life/school-satisfaction-and-climate-surv

Preschool Happenings

Preschool want to send a big thank you to the P&C for the new cubby house!

It has been a wonderful addition to the preschool playground with lots of amazing play experiences happening.

For National Dental Health Week we had a visit from the lovely team at Kaleen Laser Dental. They taught us how to keep our teeth clean and even supplied us with a little dental pack to take home!

Library Happenings

Our much loved and anticipated Book Week begins next week (21- 25 August)

Throughout the week, students will be participating in a variety of book related activities, including author visits, buddy reading with other classes and much more.

Our library has been beautifully decorated with this years theme in mind (Read, Grow, Inspire). Every student in the school has created an artwork which is tastefully displayed in the library space.

The best part of Book Week however is the Book Character Dress Up and Parade. This will be held on Friday 25 August with our parade beginning at 11:10am on the basketball court. We will parade around the school and finish on the back oval for a big group photo. Families are welcome to come along and watch.

We want to thank families for their support with the Book Fair last week and Book Week to come!

Sporting News

On a windy but beautiful and sunny Thursday afternoon, two Year 5 and 6 Kaleen teams played some Buroinjin matches against Giralang Primary School. Both our Kaleen teams advanced into the grand final to verse each other, with the Kaleen Cougars coming out on top 8-2 over the Kaleen Killer Cobras. This was the first time an interschools Indigenous games event has been run with Kaleen hosting. This has now started the beginning of something that could happen each year with the potential of a variety of sports and schools involved. Thank you to everyone for making these amazing events happen!
