Principal's Address

Dear Kaleen Community,

We are well and truly in the swing of Term 3! It was great catching up with many of our parents at our P&C meeting earlier this week. It was a fabulous opportunity for our community to plan future events, learn more about our school priorities and provide us with their feedback. I would also like to thank them for their initiative for organising the ‘ThinkUKnow’ Cyber Safety Presentation. We are very lucky to have such an active and amazing P&C.

Please read on to hear what’s happening in and around the school.

PBL

Congratulations to our fabulous students who have achieved their Mystery Target of 5500 W@K tokens. The PBL student leaders are busy deciding on our whole school mystery prize for our reward week (Week 5). Well done Team Kaleen - we hope you enjoy this well deserved reward!

In recent weeks, behaviour has been positive both in classrooms and on the playground. Our next four week focus for the whole school is Inclusivity.  We want everyone at our school to feel like they belong. We will be playing and interacting respectfully to ensure everyone feels included when we are playing and learning.

Game On Kaleen!

Thank you to the families who have come along and actively participated in the Game On Kaleen Sessions. ‘Game On’ is an ACT Government initiative to promote physical activity by delivering a series of community-based physical activity pop-up events in eight suburbs per year for the next three years. It was wonderful to see so many of our Kaleen Primary School families engaging in the program. There were lots of laughs and smiles (and sweats!). Well done to everyone involved!

Winter Walk To School Week

Winter Walk to School Week (WWTSW) is an ACT Government initiative to encourage school students to walk safely to school. It is a great opportunity to walk, ride, scoot, or skate to school, even in the colder months of winter. It increases physical activity, teaches independence, and is better for the environment than driving in a car.

Thank you to all the students who participated in the Winter Walk To School Week to school this past week. All students who took part (even if it was only for one trip!) will go into the draw to win one of 10 prize bags. The lucky winners will be drawn and announced at the next Senior (Week 4) and Junior (Week 5) assemblies.

Helpful Links and Calendar Update

Recently we were made aware that the ‘Calendar Link’ (at the top of the newsletter) was inactive and therefore blank. We apologise for this oversight and have now corrected the link. Also, check out our new ‘Helpful Links’ feature at the end of this newsletter. We will continue to add links to programs and school based videos to help strengthen our connection between home and school.

Mural

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, we are in the process of collating common ideas and themes for a mural at the front of our school. The Cultural Integrity School Improvement Team has collected ideas from all our students about ‘What does Kaleen mean to you?’ The Student Parliament is working alongside the Cultural Integrity Team and are currently collating the drawings and reflections to establish common ideas and themes that make Kaleen a special place. Last week, we had a visit from a group of Kaleen High School students (some past students) to share their ideas. Some common ideas/findings that we have established so far include; local birds, frogs (frog pond), worms, trees, The Yarning Circle, Sensory Garden, the waterways that run through the suburb, the connection to our cluster schools (Giralang- Star, Maribyrnong - Ringtail Possum, Kaleen- Water Lily), learners, families, collaboration and connection, to name just a few.

We are very excited about this project and our next step in the process is to ask the wider school community for your input.

Please click this link to provide any feedback or ideas for our mural.

Next week, we are having our first online meeting with the artist Eddie Longford to start the initial phase of the design process.

Staffing

On a final note, Chris Shaddock’s time at Macgregor Primary School has recently been extended and he will continue to act in the Principal role until the recruitment process is finalised.

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend!

Bye for now,

Michelle

2023 School Satisfaction Survey

2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey

Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 18 August to 8 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.

For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:

•          A letter about the student survey outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data (which was sent home this week); and

•          An email about the parent survey, including a unique link to access the survey. Genuine survey invitation emails will have the title "The 2023 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey is now open!" and will be sent from EDU Surveys & Evaluation with 'from' address EDU@qualtrics-survey.com

If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, please contact the school. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact the front office on 614 21750

The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.

For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part. For more information, visit: https://www.education.act.gov.au/public-school-life/school-satisfaction-and-climate-surv

National Science Week

Letter to parents - Science Week.pdf

Sporting News

On an eventful Wednesday in week 2, ten Year 5/6 students represented Kaleen by participating in the North Region Basketball ACT Cup. They toughed it out in three games against Lyneham and Ainslie, to make it through to the semi finals against Turner, going down in extra time! It was a day filled with smiles, sweaty faces and some seriously great teamwork! The team enjoyed it so much they wanted to take their jerseys home! Thank you so much to Claire Henderson who helped Miss Newton coach the team and organise subs. We couldn’t have done it without you!

Science Fair

Just 1 week left to work on the Science Fair projects. Due date is Friday 11 August 2023.

Heroes Corner

We would like to congratulate Madeleine Ling on being selected to represent the ACT Girls 9’s Oztag team at the Junior Australian National Championships, to be held mid-October in Coffs Harbour. Maddie is excited to be part of the 16-girl squad and looking forward to competing against teams from QLD and NSW. Well done, Maddie, and all the best!

Kobe, Simar and Ethan played for the Warriors Basketball Club at their Annual NAIDOC tournament.

The team played amazingly during their round-robins losing only 2 games, winning 1 and drawing 1.

The boys played South West Sydney in the finals. At the end of the 1st quarter, the boys were up by 15 points and were able to maintain a lead into the 4th quarter.

With a very close 4th quarter the boys managed to hold their nerves as a team and played with such great sportsmanship, achieving the WIN 41-33.

Well done to Simar, Ethan and Kobe (Indigenous player)
