Principal's Address

Dear Kaleen Community

Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed a wonderful break with your family and friends and are ready for an action-packed and exciting Term 3. This term, to name just a few, we will be celebrating Science Week, Book Week, Literacy and Numeracy Week and will finish off the term with our fabulous Learning Expos. Please read on to hear more about initiatives happening in and around the school.

School Upgrades

Over the holidays we had some upgrades completed in the playgrounds and at Preschool. In the Senior playground we have repainted the line markings on the basketball and handball courts. In the Junior area we have a new half size basketball court (to go with our newly installed hoop!), a refreshed number snake for hopscotch and new picture frames for chalk drawings. Also, we are pleased to announce that we have (finally!) a new cubby structure at Preschool. On behalf of the school community,  I would like to thank our fabulous Board and P&C for their incredible support with these latest upgrades. They have made a significant impact on our school environment and the students were so excited to see them when they arrived at school on Monday.

NAIDOC Week

This week we celebrated NAIDOC Week. The theme for this year is ‘For Our Elders’ and the students have participated in a range of activities to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Throughout the week the students and teachers have been collecting information about what ‘Kaleen’ means to them. This information will be collated and integral to the design of a mural which will feature at the front of the school. We have engaged with Eddie Longford (Contemporary Indigenous Artist) who will work alongside the School Community, Student Parliament and the Cultural Integrity Team to create the mural. Throughout the term we will be collaborating with former students and the wider school community, seeking input, ideas and contributions to the design. We are looking forward to creating a spectacular mural that encapsulates Kaleen Primary School.

Here are a few examples of Eddie Longford’s artwork recently completed at Harrison and Maribyrnong Primary School

GAME ON

You may have noticed the purple signs in the neighbourhood advertising ‘GAME ON KALEEN’. Game On is an initiative run by the Physical Activity Foundation & supported by the ACT Government, offering fun, FREE & family friendly physical activity for children of all ages. These activities are open to all residents in Kaleen and located conveniently at our school. Yesterday we sent home a flyer and voucher advertising these events for our families. This Sunday is the first activity “Walk, Talk and Workout’. No need to register, just turn up and enjoy some physical exercise and free fruit and coffee (or hot chocolate).

If you’d like to know more about this initiative, please visit https://paf.org.au/

ASSEMBLIES

Assemblies will continue on Friday afternoons at 2:15pm starting in Week 2, alternating senior and junior each week. The focus of these assemblies is  on special messages, awards and a performance item from the host cohort. Please see the Term 3 timetable below for more details:

Week 2 - Year 6

Week 3 - Year 2

Week 4 - Year 5

Week 5 - Year 1

Week 6 - Year 4

Week 7 - Kindergarten

Week 8 - Year 3

NAPLAN

We have received preliminary data on our Years 3 and 5 students’ NAPLAN results. Back in Term 1, students in Years 3 and 5 participated in NAPLAN assessments in reading, writing, mathematics and conventions of language. Due to a change in how NAPLAN is now being scored, there has been a slight delay in sharing the outcomes of these assessments with the school and families. Families can expect to receive their child’s NAPLAN reports in Term 3, along with further information about the new scoring system.

2024 STUDENT PROJECTIONS

It’s that time of year again when we start to plan for 2024. To help us with our planning we would appreciate it if you could fill in this form if you are intending on leaving Kaleen at the end of this year and will not be returning in 2024.

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend and I look forward to seeing some of you on Sunday for the first ‘GAME ON KALEEN’ activity.

Bye for now,

Michelle

Voluntary Contributions  Library Trust

For many years, students have benefited from the financial resources provided through voluntary contributions from parents, carers and other citizens. With these contributions, our school can purchase additional educational materials, and provide supplementary programs and activities for students. The School Board works collaboratively with the P&C to allocate these funds towards the school’s various educational programs and initiatives. Our School Board has approved the same contribution rate as previous years - $95 for one child or $150 for a family.

Voluntary contributions may be made in full, in part or in instalments to our Library Trust Fund that has been established to enable parents to make tax deductible contributions of $2 or more.

Thank you to those families that have made a contribution this year.

Sporting News

Athletics Carnival

On a frosty Tuesday morning students from Year 2-6 (2015-2011) participated in our annual Senior Athletics Carnival. Students, teachers and assistants engaged with enthusiasm in the 9 different rotation activities on offer.

As can be expected, our students brought the best of sporting attitudes to their efforts on the day, encouraging and supporting each other, and working together to ensure a fun day for all.

Congratulations to everyone for the high levels of participation, support, encouragement and fun experienced throughout the day.

Thanks to everyone who came to support the students on the chilly day.

Congratulations to the winning house Hawkesbury.

The Belconnen Region Track and Field Carnival will be held on Tuesday 15 August at the AIS. Attached are the results from the carnival.

Not all students who placed will qualify to go to the carnival.

Students will be notified and will receive a note next term.

Wanted: A brave volunteer with a flair for social media!

The P&C is always looking for volunteers to join our wonderful committee to help out in small ways but our Facebook page in particular is feeling very unloved. If someone out there enjoys posting on socials and wouldn't mind doing some infrequent posting about useful info, activities, and meetings, it (and us) would be very grateful. Please email kaleenpandc@gmail.com if you'd like to help out or know more.

We would like to congratulate Cody Crabb who has been selected to represent the ACT at the Australian school boys rugby league championships, which will be held in Townsville during the first week of August.

Cody is one of 17 young men selected to compete against QLD, NSW & VIC.

This is an awesome opportunity and a massive achievement. Well done Cody.

If you would like to have your child's achievement acknowledged here, please email a short blurb to KaleenPSAdmin@ed.act.edu.au
