Principal's Address

Dear Kaleen Community

Wishing all of our Mothers and other special people in our lives a happy Mother’s Day this Sunday. A huge thank you to Liz Marzano, Krissy McCombe and the team of parents who organised and worked on our school stall. Witnessing the delight that the children experience when buying something for their mother or special person melts your heart. Please read on to hear more about other happenings in and around the school.

P&C News

It was great to see some new and familiar faces at our P&C AGM earlier this week. Thank you to all members of the P&C and school community for all their contributions (small and large) over the past few years. The P&C committee has established a fun, positive and solutions focused culture and our members add significant value to our school. Congratulations to Simon Bartlett who has been reelected as our 2023 President and also to all new P&C executive and committee members. P&C meetings are a great way to catch up with other members of our community and give parents the opportunity to offer feedback and have input into school initiatives. We would love to see even more parents at our next meeting later this term.

Super School Captains!

We had some feedback from families that they would like to know more about staff and school leaders. This week, I sat down with our wonderful school captains to find out more about them.

How did you feel when you were elected as School and Vice Captains?

Romy: When the announcement came over the loudspeaker I felt very proud. I worked hard on my speech and poster and tried to include everything that would be important to other students.

Umar: I was really surprised and happy! I thought one of my other friends would get elected instead.

Cam: I was confident before the announcement, but wasn’t sure that I would win. I also felt extremely proud after I heard my name on the loudspeaker.

Bea: I think I was in shock when I found out. My friends told me my face was as red as a tomato and I collapsed onto my friend.

What do you love about our school?

Romy: Socialising and working with other people.

Umar: I love working with our buddies and I love playing sport.

Cam: I love the way the teachers teach - it’s fun and engaging! I also like hanging out with friends.

Bea: I love how inclusive everyone is. We are all different but we’re able to get along. I love being a role model and when we get to lead junior students.

What are your biggest achievements and what else do you hope to achieve in the future?

Romy: Getting the role of Mirabel from Encanto and watching the little kids smile as we danced. I felt very grateful to have this opportunity and hope to do more things like that in the future. I love hearing ideas from kids across the school and working with the community to make them come to life.

Umar: Becoming school captain was amazing because I can now contribute more to the school. Getting things for other kids (like sports equipment) makes me feel like I’m making a difference. In the future I would like to get into law school and become a lawyer.

Cam: My biggest achievement this year was getting elected as Vice Captain. My next goal is to work with the school canteen to extend the menu and to have more vegetarian options for kids.

Bea: Winning the role of vice captain was huge! In the future I would like to continue to be a leader in high school and beyond.’

Thank you to our amazing school captains for all their contributions to our school!

Assemblies

We are excited to reintroduce assemblies each Friday afternoon 2:15pm (alternating senior and junior each week). These replace our virtual assemblies and focus on special messages, awards and a performance item from the host cohort. Last week, Year 6 hosted our first senior assembly in almost three years. It was great to see so many parents in attendance. We look forward to Year 2 leading their first ever junior assembly this afternoon. Please see the Term 2 timetable below for more details:

Week 2 - Year 6

Week 3 - Year 2

Week 4 - Year 5

Week 5 - Year 1

Week 6 - Year 4

Week 7 - Kindergarten

Week 8 - Year 3

A wonderful performance from Year 2 today!

Mr Shaddock’s Three Slightly Below Average Jokes

“Yeah,” the other cow said. “Makes me glad I’m a penguin.”

Library Lego Challenge

This term, we have created a fun borrowing initiative. Every time students borrow a book, they receive a piece of LEGO to contribute to our whole school masterpiece. This aims to be a  fun way of igniting imagination, creativity and prompting students to borrow and read more library books!

It has already grown so much in the first three weeks. We look forward to seeing the creation evolve as the weeks go on!

WEEK 1

WEEK 3

Notification of student absences

Our Student Administration System (SAS) provides a streamlined method for parents to notify the school of a student’s absence. Each morning SAS sends a text message to parents if their child has been marked absent from school. We ask that parents reply to this text message, which is recorded in SAS. It is no longer necessary to call the school to report a child’s absence. Please note this does not apply to the reporting of COVID positive cases.

Students who arrive at school after 9:10am are considered late and must sign in at the Front Office for their attendance to be recorded. Please remind your children to do this if they have arrived late to avoid receiving messages unnecessarily.

I look forward to seeing you in and around the school.

Bye for now,

Voluntary Contributions  Library Trust

For many years, students have benefited from the financial resources provided through voluntary contributions from parents, carers and other citizens. With these contributions, our school can purchase additional educational materials, and provide supplementary programs and activities for students. The School Board works collaboratively with the P&C to allocate these funds towards the school’s various educational programs and initiatives. Our School Board has approved the same contribution rate as previous years - $95 for one child or $150 for a family. Voluntary contributions may be made in full, in part or in instalments to our Library Trust Fund that has been established to enable parents to make tax deductible contributions of $2 or more.

Thank you to those families that have made a contribution this year.
