Year 3 and Year 4 Recorder Program
As part of the enrichment program, recorder lessons, similar to the Year 5 and 6 Band program, is offered
to interested students in Year 3 and Year 4. The offer is limited to a maximum of twenty-five students
in each year level. No prior musical knowledge is necessary but students are assessed to determine
each child’s ability to hear differences in the sounds of notes, melodies and rhythms.
Selected students receive instruction in basic and more advanced techniques using the descant recorder
for Year 3 or a mixture of recorders for Year 4 (descant, treble, tenor and bass). Lessons occur for fifty
minutes from 2.00pm on Tuesday (Year 3) and Thursday (Year 4). Students are also required to attend
a thirty minute lunch time practice each week.
Following the initial introduction of notes, new fingering and more complex theory, students are required to:
- Practice for at least 50 minutes per week,
- Be responsible for his/her recorder, music and folder.
