Principal's Address

Dear Kaleen Community,

Week 7 has flown by and I can’t believe we’re in the final three weeks of the school year. Once again, we have seen such amazing growth from our students, and classes are now taking the opportunity to celebrate their achievements against their learning goals. Student reports will be sent home via email on Monday Week 10. Please take a moment to reflect on all that your child has achieved over the course of the year.

We are currently reviewing our whole school's 2022 achievements in order to write our School Improvement Plan, Annual Impact Report, Board Report and plan our Annual Action Plan for 2021. We are proud of what we have achieved and excited by our future direction. Please read on to hear about information and events happening in and around the school.

Market Day

Year 6 Market Day was a huge success today! Exceptional leadership was demonstrated by our Year 6 cohort and all students showed safe, respectful and responsible behaviours! I was so impressed with the Year 6 student leaders for creating a carnival-like atmosphere and supporting the younger students to enjoy the various stalls. Congratulations to the Year 6 teachers, students and parents for their donations, stall creations and work on the day.

PBL Achievement

Our students have achieved their whole school PBL target by earning 7000 W@K tokens! Each class has earned a ticket to our “Creative Play” reward which will be held on Tuesday Week 9. In teams (or individually) kids will be given the opportunity to create an invention, solve a set problem or just have free creativity time. Students are able to dress up in Christmas colours or anything related to end of year celebrations. Congratulations to all our staff, parents and students for their contributions towards our positive school environment in 2022.

Online eSafety Resources for Families

With our growing reliance on technology, it’s important to increase our awareness of how to stay safe in the online world. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner provides advice and support to all Australians in this area. To support your child to navigate their digital world and avoid harmful online experiences, the following information can assist you in having the hard-to-have conversations about online safety and setting boundaries.

Your support and guidance can give your child the confidence to make sound decisions online – and know where to go for help when they need support or advice.

  • Be engaged, open and supportive

  • Get involved. Share online time with your child as a part of family life. Talk about favourite apps, games, and websites.

  • Keep lines of communication open. Ask about their online experiences, who they are talking to and whether they are having any issues.

  • Reassure your child they can always come to you, no matter what. Let them know you will not cut off internet access if they report feeling uncomfortable or unsafe when online – this is a real concern that may stop your child from communicating with you openly.

  • Get to know the devices you and your child use and set them up for privacy and online safety.

  • Use parental controls as appropriate to set boundaries.

  • If you feel your child needs support, please maintain contact with our school so you can work together to support them. Seek professional help if your child is distressed or shows marked changes in behaviour or mood, remembering that organisations such as Kids’ Helpline and Beyond Blue can help.

  • If you feel your child is in immediate danger or at risk of harm, call Triple Zero (000) and stay with them until they are safe.

You can find additional information and resources at the Office of the eSafety Commissioner to support you and your family.

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Bye for now,

Chris Shaddock

Principal

A reminder to stay COVID Smart

As we experience new waves of the virus in our community, we need to remember to stay COVID Smart in the workplace and in our schools.

For the latest advice, watch the ACT COVID-19 update (November 2022) from Chief Health Officer, Kerryn Coleman.

Keep up your COVID Smart behaviours

  • Make sure you are up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines, including boosters.

  • Stay away from work and schools if you are unwell.

  • Wash your hands regularly.

  • Wear a mask in public indoor places if you can (12 years and over).

  • Keep a distance from others when indoors, if possible.

  • Get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms.
