Principal's Address

Dear Kaleen Community,

Welcome to the halfway mark of Term 4! We are midway through a busy term of learning and are loving every minute of it. Please read on to hear about the happenings in and around the school.

Colour Run & Sport-a-thon

Congratulations to our P&C and Student Parliament for organising and running Kaleen Primary School’s first ever Sport-a-thon & Colour Run! It was an absolutely amazing event and it was lovely to see so many of our parents volunteering, spectating, participating and partying alongside the children. The weather was near perfect and our students had an absolute ball. Thank you to our incredible community who helped us to raise $22 000 for our school! A portion of the money raised will be used to purchase a large gazebo, five teardrop banners (for each House group and a Kaleen Primary School banner), a set of basketball singlets, a set of rugby jerseys, a variety of new sporting balls, junior gymnastics equipment and will also cover the cost of each student’s coloured powder and sunglasses. The rest of the money raised will go towards future P&C events and supporting the school to purchase necessary resources and equipment to enhance student learning and the learning environment. What an amazing achievement!

Chess News

Congratulations to our Kaleen Girls Chess team for winning best Primary Girls Chess Team in the ACT for a second consecutive year! Our girls have qualified to represent the ACT at the national level later this year. Our open team also recently qualified to represent the ACT at a national level! Thank you to all the students involved for representing Kaleen Primary School and the ACT and we wish you the best of luck (strategy really) at the nationals in Cairns.

2023 Class Placements

The process of allocating children to classes for 2023 has started.

The allocations are based on the following considerations:

· Friendships

· Learning dispositions

· Behavioural considerations

· Personalities

As part of the process of allocating students to classes, the children are given the opportunity to nominate 5 friends with whom they would like to share a class next year. They are guaranteed to have at least one of these friends with them in 2023. These nominations are based purely on friendship and not on any other factors and are the child’s decision to make. The ‘5 Friends’ lists will be completed by the children at a suitable time, in class, in the next two weeks. My firm belief is that teachers are in the best position to decide a child’s placement because they know all the children and how they function in a school environment. However, I invite parents to inform me of anything that they feel needs to be considered, for their own child’s well-being or development. I have allowed 2 weeks’ time in which to notify me of your concerns, in writing. All requests should be submitted through this Google Form. After the cut-off date of Friday 25 November, it will not be possible to take further requests into account. Information also needs to be provided each year as circumstances can change. I will do my best to support your wishes but will not promise anything. Please be aware that requests for particular teachers cannot be accommodated on most occasions.

Mr Shaddock’s Logic Puzzles

  1. Billy’s mother had five children. The first was named Lala, the second was named Lele, the third was named Lili, the fourth was named Lolo. What was the fifth child named?

A: Billy

2. There are two guards standing next to two doors. One door leads to a million dollar prize, and the other to an empty room. One guard always lies and the other always tells the truth. They know that they lie/tell the truth and that the other guard does the opposite. They also know where the two doors lead. You do not know which guard is which or which door is which. You may ask one of the guards one question. What do you ask to determine which door leads to the million dollar prize?

A: The solution to the problem is: “If I were to ask the other guard which door leads to the million dollars, what would they say?” If you ask the liar, they will lie about what the truth-teller would say, and will point you to the door that leads to nothing. The truth teller would tell the truth that the liar would point to the door to nothing. So, both guards would point you towards the door to nothing, and so you take the other door.

3. Solve the following term:

CO TAX ME

A: Income tax

Congratulations to all the staff, students and parents who solved these puzzles!

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Bye for now,

Chris Shaddock

Preschool Fun

Our Preschool Educators applied for a children's week grant and were lucky enough to be successful. With the grant we were able to purchase 2 new pieces of equipment for the outdoor obstacle course.

Sustainability

Look how many ways we recycle at Kaleen Primary School.

This week Mrs Reeves took a whole bunch of textas, pens, whiteboard markers and glue sticks to be recycled at Office Works.

Every week we take 8 bags of soft plastics to Coles for recycling. We also collect between 250 – 300 containers to recycle at the 10c Deposit Scheme.

What a difference this all makes to keeping our landfill down to a minimum.
