Principal's Address

Dear Kaleen Community,

It has been a positive and productive start to Term 4 and much has been achieved over the past few weeks. Students are currently completing their final assessments and will soon be celebrating their 2022 personal growth and achievements. Today we officially celebrate World Teachers’ Day, but thanks to our magnificent P&C we were able to celebrate earlier in the week. Thank you P&C for our wonderful morning tea and messages of support. I am proud of our talented teaching team, who have adapted and shone bright in what has been a very challenging few years (for everyone). Your ongoing support and gratitude is greatly appreciated by our teachers!

Bandanna Day

Yesterday we wore our bandannas, in support of Canteen, as a part of National Bandanna Day. This is usually done on the last Friday of October, but due to the pupil free day, we moved it to Thursday. Since Bandanna Day began, Canteen has raised more than $35 million to support young people impacted by cancer. This year, we sold 300 bandannas raising $1500 for this great cause! Thanks to Student Parliament for organising this fundraiser and to all members of the community who participated.

Sport-a-thon and Colour Run Fundraiser

Thank you to Krissy McCombe (Community Liaison Officer) and our P & C for all their work and leadership related to the upcoming Sport-a-thon and Colour Run fundraiser. This is the P & C’s major fundraising project for the year and all monies raised will go towards purchasing sports equipment, a school marquee, and house banners and flags for future sporting events. Thank you to our amazing community who have supported this event through their generous donations. I look forward to seeing many of you on the day.

PBL Reward

In Week 1, we achieved our whole school mystery target of 7000 W@K tokens! To celebrate, the PBL leaders decided that this week would be ‘Games Week’, and each class received 60 minutes of extra game time. Some classes played their favourite sports, others played cards and board games and some did a combination of both. Here is what the kids had to say about it!

Freya (KMC) “I’ve been playing Snap. You have to snap the same fish and you have to snap the same colours and numbers. I like playing to see how many cards I can get”

Brooke (1TS) “I’ve been playing animal games and we’ve been having fun and giggling”

Alex and Mitch (2DO) “We did critical thinking activities like maths, chess and puzzles”

Aaron (3JF) “We got to choose from dodgeball or board games. I chose dodgeball and I caught lots of people out. It was a lot of fun”

Archer (4SC) “I liked this reward because we got a choice between PE and board games. We have a wide variety of board games”

Gideon & Marlowe (5KT) “We played cooperative games together on the Chromebook. I enjoyed playing with our friends, while talking about the games we like playing together”

Aarya (6SD) “We played tennis and learnt about the different strokes and how to rally”.

Mr Shaddock’s Logic Puzzles

  1. Billy’s mother had five children. The first was named Lala, the second was named Lele, the third was named Lili, the fourth was named Lolo. What was the fifth child named?

  1. There are two guards standing next to two doors. One door leads to a million dollar prize, and the other to an empty room. One guard always lies and the other always tells the truth. They know that they lie/tell the truth and that the other guard does the opposite. They also know where the two doors lead. You do not know which guard is which or which door is which. You may ask one of the guards one question. What do you ask to determine which door leads to the million dollar prize?

  1. Solve the following term:

CO TAX ME

Please email answers to KaleenPSAdmin@ed.act.edu.au to check your answers and to receive your mystery prize (it’s not a million dollars).

Thank you for your ongoing support.

Bye for now,

Science Fair 2022

Thank you to all of the wonderful students who entered the Kaleen Primary Science Fair this year. We loved seeing all of your hard work and we learned a lot about science. Everyone who entered the competition got a prize this year. Congratulations on your amazing projects. They are now at the SeaACT Science Fair for adjudicating. Good luck to everyone. We should hear back soon about how well our Kaleen Students have gone.

Well done to all our budding scientists.

Moonhack 2022

Moonhack is a coding event where students get a chance to learn to code projects to do with space week. This year, Mrs Turner ran this fun event for Year 5, by posting coding cards on google classroom to help us along, all of them featuring space.

This project took Moonhackers through a journey through Scratch space, over the (light) years of week 1-3. Moonhack got Moonhackers to make three different projects on the Scratch coding platform. We used the provided coding cards, and worked through increasingly harder code. These projects included guiding a satellite to earth (game), putting out fires (clicker) and telling the story of the Tagai constellations (animation).

Although, not all people staying in were Moonhackers. People other than Moonhackers (Scratch Lovers) stayed in to provide a helping hand (or rocket). We enjoyed participating in Moonhack, and we are looking forward to next year! The point of Moonhack is to celebrate space week, and, of course, coding. Code Club Australia shared this plan in an email to many schools, and we were lucky enough for Mrs Turner to sign Year Five up. We loved Moonhack, and next year we hope more years can participate!
