Principal's Address

Dear Kaleen Community,

We are well and truly in the swing of Term 3! It was great catching up with many of our parents at our P&C meeting earlier this week. It was a fabulous opportunity for our community to plan future events, learn more about our school priorities and provide us with their feedback. Please read on to hear what’s happening in and around the school.

PBL

Congratulations to our fabulous students who have achieved their Mystery Target of 4000 W@K tokens. The PBL student leaders have chosen a whole school prize which is a “Brains or Games” reward week. In Week 4, students in each cohort will choose to stay inside and use their brains to participate in trivia (run by their teachers) or go outside to play one of their favourite PE games. Well done - we hope you enjoy this well deserved reward!

In recent weeks, behaviour has been positive both in classrooms and on the playground. Our next four week focus for the junior school is keeping hands and feet to ourselves on the playground. Our four week focus for the senior school is playing games to have fun on the playground (rather than being overly competitive). Teachers and the PBL leadership team will be looking for these positive behaviours on the playground in the coming weeks.

Party Play Initiative

Last year the P&C supported our Student Parliament ‘Party Play’ initiative by purchasing a portable party speaker, Bluetooth microphones and a new iPad to run music. Party Play was paused due to covid restrictions, but will be reintroduced in the coming weeks. Each day our Year 5 student leaders will be on the junior playground to engage our younger students in (optional) high energy cooperative games. Junior students can listen and dance to music and play a variety of student-led party style games (involving parachutes, mini stilts, sacks, balls etc). Thanks to our P&C and student leaders for working together to further enhance our positive school culture.

Newsletter Feedback

Thanks to the parents who filled in our newsletter feedback survey. Parents showed they value our school’s communication and reminders through Seesaw and the photos and updates in the school newsletter about whole school events. The School Board will now review the responses and use this to enhance our future communication and newsletters.

Mathematics in the classroom

Our teachers continue to focus on the language related to Mathematics, which is being explicitly taught in our classrooms. Some parents have mentioned that it would be valuable for the school to share this with parents to enable them to support their children at home. As a result we put together a parent friendly language cheat sheet to share with families. The information is based on Paul Swan's work and the lists are linked to the Australian Curriculum. Bye for now,

2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey

Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2022 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 19 August to 9 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.

For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:

  • A letter about the parent survey, including a link to access the survey.; and

  • A letter about the student survey (Years 4-6) outlining the reasons for collection and privacy provision for the data

If you do not receive the survey invitation, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, contact the school and you will be provided a survey link. If you do not have an email listed with the school, please contact the front office on 614 21750

The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish, Telugu, French and Italian. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.

For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part.

National Tree Day

Thank you to everyone who participated in National Tree Day 2022.

Some students hugged a tree.

Some students participated in a Nature Walk through the Red Rivergum Forest.

Some students learned how to maintain trees and bushes growing in our Carbon Forest. These native trees were planted on this day last year, just before the lockdown. It so wonderful to see how well they are growing and thriving today.

We held our Tree art competition. We had almost 60 entries and almost 20 prizes were awarded. We hope you enjoy these photos of our incredible artworks to celebrate trees.
